THE FINEST AND CHARMING HIGH ALTITUDE LAKES IN THE HIMALAYAS

Pangong Tso

The Pangong Lake is 160 Kilometer from Leh and offers spectacular scenic view of the region. The lake is surrounded by mountains and the color of the lake changes shades throughout the day. This famous blue brackish lake is located on the India China border and is approximately 5 Kms wide and over 144 Kms long. Majority of the lake body falls in the Chinese territory. Spangmik, the farthest point to which visitors are permitted is only some seven kilometers along the southern shore from the head of the lake and you can view the changehenmo range, their reflections shimmering in the ever changing blues and greens of the lake’s briny waters.

Tsomoriri

The Tsomoriri lake is a beautiful mountain bounded stretch of water located around 240 Kms from Leh. The lake is located at 14000 ft near the small village of Korzok. Korzok is sparsely populated and is the only permanent settlement in Rupshu, which is otherwise inhabited only by nomadic Chang-pa herdsmen. Though it is much smaller than the Pangong lake, it is equally spectacular and is the only breeding ground for many migratory birds including the endangered black necked crane, the bar-headed goose, the great crested grebe, the Brahmini duck and the bar-headed gull. Kyang, the wild ass of the Ladakh and Tibetan plateau, marmots, hares and an unusual tail less rat are also found here.

The Nubra Valley

Nubra, also called the valley of flowers, is located in the north of Leh around 120 Kms across Khardung La, the worlds highest motorable road. Nubra used to be an important trade center on the famous silk rout leading from Leh to Kashgar through the two passes of Saser and Karakoram.

The main attractions of this region are the Bactrian camels called double humped camels, the Khadungla Pass, the Diskit and Samstaling monasteries and the hot springs at Panamik.

Diskit, Hundar, Panamik and Tiger are the main towns and villages of Nubra. Diskit is home to a busy and dramatically positioned Gompa. It is also the administrative centre of Nubra. Hundar is the greenest of all Nubra villages. This is also the place where you can view the splendid beauty of a desert. The Bactrian camels are found here and one can take a camel ride on the white sand dunes. Panamik village is famous for hot water springs, reputed to have therapeutic qualities.

The Aryan Circle

Dha-Hanu, the land of Aryans is located around 163 Kms to the south west of Leh. There are many small villages but only two villages of Dha and Hanu are open for tourists.

The main attraction of this area are the Drok-pa community, who are Buddhists by faith, but racially and culturally distinct from the rest of the Ladakhis.

Drok-pas are believed to have migrated to this area via Gilgit around thousands of years ago from Central Asia.

They are considered to be the last race of Aryans and have pure Indo Aryan features unlike the mongoloid features of Ladakhis.

Their culture and religious practices are more similar to the ancient pre-Buddhist animist religion, known as Bon-chos, than to Buddism as practiced in rest of Ladakh.

This region is famous for fruits such as apricots, apples, walnuts and grapes.

KAZA TOUR

Departure – June – September

Kaza is Ladakh at its rugged best. An amazing hill station, Kaza is a chief town in the majestic Spiti valley. Spiti means middle land – between India and Tibet. The Spiti valley receives very little rainfall is bound on both sides by Lahaul and Kullu valley. The locals pronounce Spiti as Piti. The hills are rugged and rocky with zero vegetation projecting spectacular shapes formed due to millions of years of wind erosion. Its a quiet and serene location with the famous Ki Monastery and the 14th century Thang Yud Monastery. Kaza can be reached from Kalpa (222 Km) which lies in the South east via Tabo which is 47 Km from and also from Shimla .
